Lean on me
When you're not strong
I'll give you hope
I'll help you carry on
We all need somebody to lean on.
from the song
Nothing
is more true than this song when it comes to grandparents raising
grandchildren. Together we can ease the pain, share the good
times and help one another to grow and be the best we can be
for our grandchildren, our families and ourselves. To be with
others who know exactly what we are going through is so healing.
Some have been there and done that and can help us past the
rough spots and can give us hope that we too can not only survive
this new adventure of raising grandchildren but flourish and
bring forth a new generation of responsible human beings. What
better goal could a person have.
Below is a

Our Online Support Group:
Mission: We are a group of grandparents &
caregivers who have come together to strive for rights,
support, and respect in order to protect our grandchildren
and encourage their growth and development.
We have created a ribbon
to help raise the awareness of citizens to the escalating
problem of grandchildren being raised by their grandparents
or other relative caregiver.
The ribbon is purple,
which signifies "abuse survivor" (which most of our
children are) and we have added two small oblong pearls
to signify the tears of the children.
We are committed to
making changes in the present laws in the state of
Delaware, to help make this monumental job a bit less
burdensome

The Director of a new Grandparent Resource Center
in Wilmington, DE, Patricia Anderson , has notified
us that a program was started in the beginning of September
for grandparents and relative caregivers raising others'
children. She relayed to us that the grandparents can
come there for all their needs. The Center offers
information and referrals for anything they might need,
for themselves and the children. They are the first
center in the state specifically for grandparents and
other relative caregivers.
They offer a grandparent
support group meeting once a week for all those in the
community to join together in this challenge and help
each other cope and resolve whatever issues may come
up. This is the first support group of it's kind, and
there are plans to start more within the state in the
next 3 years.
In the small city of
Wilmington, they have over 3,000 grandparent headed
households (and that was from the 1990 census!), so
you can imagine the need! It is a growing population
in their area alone, so imagine the rest of the country.
Please contact Patricia
Anderson at amyatgrc@bellatlantic.net
for additional information or help.
